Assam: Police recovers ganja worth Rs 1 crore from Kokrajhar

The Assam Police has recovered 622 kilograms of ganja from Srirampur area of Kokrajhar in an anti-drugs campaign on Tuesday.

Speaking after the recovery, Kokrajhar SP, Prateek Thube said, “Acting on a tip-off, we intercepted a truck bearing registration no (PB-08 DS 6178) coming from Kolkata and recovered the contraband items. The driver of the truck somehow managed to flee, however, we arrested the two handymen."

"Upon thorough checking of the vehicle we seized 61 packets of ganja of approximately Rs 1 crore value in the market," the SP added. Thube also informed that cannabis has a big market in Kolkata and the drug is usually supplied from Assam and other Northeastern states.

In a similar incident last month, Assam Police had seized 850 kg of ganja from Srirampur area, a third such haul since May 2021, when 570 kg of the contraband substance was seized from the same area. Meanwhile, the SP has called for a crackdown against the trade of contraband substances and ordered stern action against those involved in drug peddling.
