DIBRUGARH:

Assam Police on Sunday night arrested two persons in connection with Siphajar eviction drive violence that left three persons dead and several others injured on September 23.

The accused have been identified as Md Asmat Ali Ahmed and Md Chand Mamud.

According to the police, the two persons have been charged with criminal conspiracy, instigating violence and mobilising crowds at the behest of extremist organisations such as the PFI, as well as its college-level wing Campus Front of India (CFI).

Mamud is the President of Sonowa Village Panchayat, while Ali is the former President of Bojona Pathar village Panchayat, the police informed.

On Saturday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Assam government has clear evidence of the involvement of six persons, including a lecturer, in the case.

He went on to say that these six people had collected Rs 28 lakh over four months from the poor families of Dholpur convincing them that they will stop the eviction drive. “When they couldn’t resist the drive, they mobilised the people and created havoc,” Sarma had said on September 25.
