Assam police arrest 3 Rohingya women in Cachar district

GUWAHATI: Assam Police apprehended three Rohingya women, who fled from Vairengte police station in Mizoram, from Dholaikhal in Assam’s Cachar district, on December 6.

The three women, identified as Toyaba (22), Atarija (16) and Senuara (20) who are residents of different villages in Rakhine in Myanmar, were later handed over to Mizoram police on Sunday evening.

Sources said that they had entered the country without legal documents and were detained in Mizoram under the Foreigners Act 1946.

Dholai officer-in-charge, Sahabuddin Barbhuiyan, said the women had earlier fled from a detention camp in Mizoram and were later arrested by Vairengte police.

A case (number 42/2019) under Section 14 of Foreigners Act 1946 was also registered against the three women at Vairengte police station.

“We were informed about the case registered against the three women by Vairengte police yesterday. Subsequently, the three women, who were Rohingya infiltrators, were handed over to a sub-inspector from Vairengte police station around 8.30 pm in our police station,” Barbhuiyan said.

“The women had also approached a person by the name of Salim Uddin (who did not know them) at Dholaikhal to take them to Lailapur,” he said.
