GUWAHATI:

The Assam government on Wednesday organised a 7-km cycle rally to support and motivate Lovlina Borgohain, the lone athlete from the state who is part of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo Olympics.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his cabinet colleagues, MLAs from both the ruling and Opposition parties took part in a cycle rally on Wednesday to garner support and cheer for Lovlina.

The Assam CM flagged off the rally ‘Go for Glory Lovlina’ and also took part in the cycle rally that started from Last Gate to Nehru Stadium in Guwahati.

In his short speech, Sarma said that every Assam resident is praying for the success of Lovlina at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

“We are so proud of Lovlina who is the first female athlete from #Assam to represent India at the #Olympics & the second boxer after Shiva Thapa to participate in the same from the state,” Sarma tweeted.

23-year-old ace boxer Lovlina Borgohain qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in March last year and will be competing in the welterweight category (69 kg).

Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to begin on July 23 with the boxing events starting from July 24.

Earlier on Monday, the Assam government had announced to provide jobs to National Games medalists, along with Olympics, Asian and Commonwealth Games medalists, apart from providing sports pension to National Games medal winners for Assam, in a bid to promote sports in the state.
