GUWAHATI:

In a bid to revive the Covid-hit tourism industry, the Assam Government has decided to lift all Covid restrictions from November 1, announced Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“The Assam government is working towards lifting all COVID restrictions from November 1 in the state,” he said.

Given the devastating effect of the pandemic on businesses across all sectors, the CM said that the tourism industry has the potential to bounce back in quick time after restrictions are lifted.

Speaking on the sidelines of World Tourism Day on Monday, Sarma stressed on promotion of lesser-known destinations of Assam other than the national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.  He said that Assam’s other specialities such as local cuisine, handloom, handicraft, and tribal culture too need to be explored by the tourists.

Appreciating efforts undertaken by Indian Railways such as Vistadome service from Guwahati to New Haflong in Dima Hasao, Sarma spoke extensively about promoting hill regions of Assam such as Karbi Anglong, Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), and other less-visited parts of the state.

The chief minister also announced relief packages for tour operators who have suffered financial loss due to the Covid-inducted lockdown. The relief package includes Rs 2 lakh each to 142 tour operators and 25,000 each to 605 tourism guides.
