GUWAHATI:

Amid the rising COVID-19 infections and the recent detection of the Indian double mutant strain in Assam, “some doctors, students and even interns” of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), have tested positive in the past few days, official sources confirmed.

GMCH Principal, Dr Achyut Kumar Baishya on Friday evening said, “We have had some doctors, students and interns who have tested positive for the virus in the past three to four days.”

“About six students of the medical college have tested positive for the virus and are currently undergoing treatment,” Dr Baishya confirmed.

The current strain, which is lighter and spreads faster, is also affecting people in the relatively younger age category (below 45 years), for which the third phase would also cover persons in the 18-45 years age category.

Asked whether their contacts of the infected students have been traced, he however said that he was not aware of where they belong to, have been to or come in contact with before testing positive.
