DIBRUGARH:

Environmentalists have raised concern after a carcass of an elephant was found floating at Buridehing river in Dehing-Patkai National Park, Dibrugarh.

While it was suspected that the elephant may have drowned because of the rising water level, environmentalists have pointed that the death may be a case of poisoning.

Locals also maintained that in the past many elephant deaths were reported due to Anthrax-a bacterial disease commonly found in animals.

"Right now, we cannot say the exact cause of the elephant's death. After the postmortem report we can say how the elephant died," said a forest official, while adding that last year the samples from dead elephants revealed the presence of Anthrax disease in the animals.

However, an environmentalist, Devojit Moran has said that the death may be a cause of poaching, as this is not the first time such incidents have been reported.

Urging the Forest Department to keep a vigil on poaching activities, Moran has called the villagers to jointly work with the government in preventing such activities, given the rich fauna at Dehing-Patkai National Park.
