Assam: Educational institutions in Kamrup Metro to be shut if COVID cases rise to 1000

Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday informed that all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities and hostels, would be immediately closed if the COVID-19 positive cases in the Kamrup Metropolitan district touch the 1000 mark in a day.

Kamrup Metropolitan district has had the highest number of COVID-19 positive cases since the fresh surge, with the district reporting as many as 742 cases out of a total of 1651 cases in the state on Tuesday.

“We have decided in a meeting today that if the COVID-19 positive cases in Kamrup Metro district touch the 1000-mark, the district administration will take a call on shutting down educational institutions and hostels. However, the SOPs, which allow 50 per cent attendance in educational institutions (from Class VI onwards), will continue to be in effect till then,” Sarma said.

“The state education department will issue a notification in this regard on Thursday,” he added.

Physical classes for students of Class 6 and above have been allowed with 50 per cent attendance in districts reporting over 100 active COVID-19 positive cases, with school authorities directed to stagger the class timings.

In the guidelines issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday, schools have been directed to avoid morning assemblies or any other assemblies as a precautionary measure against the virus.
