DIBRUGARH:

Dibrugarh district of Assam has surpassed the other districts in its COVID-19 vaccination drive despite the shortcomings in the availability of the vaccines.

"There has been a slight shortage of the second dose of the Covaxin vaccine, but it will improve in the coming days. However, Dibrugarh district has been performing admirably in its vaccination drive compared to other districts," stated District Immunization Officer, Dr Biswajit Baruah.

Due to the shortage of vaccines, many people in Assam have expired the second dose time frame, sources informed.

"Limited stocks of Covaxin has been coming in Dibrugarh, but due to the availability of Covishield vaccine, our performance is little better. It is expected that within a few days, the matter will be sorted out," Dr Baruah added.

According to figures, a total of 2,13085 people have been vaccinated in Dibrugarh till Friday, giving priority to those who have exceeded 42 days time frame, a health official stated.

Also, the second dose, given to those exceeding 42 days in selected centres, are required to undergo the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT), respectively.

Informing about the registration process of the second dose, the health official said, "No registration will be required for the second dose. It will be a walk-in process."
Meanwhile, out of the 8534 samples tested on Friday, 243 were found positive for COVID-19.

The overall tally of active cases in Dibrugarh stands at 5,650. Also, 31,716 COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in the Dibrugarh district since May.
