GUWAHATI:

Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta has asked lessees of markets, shop owner associations and chambers of commerce to take the onus of ensuring maintenance of COVID-19 protocols during the curfew relaxation hours.

Addressing newsmen here on Monday, the DGP said that lessees and shop owners have been asked to open their markets and shops early and to ensure circles for people to maintain the requisite physical distance as they queue up to procure their essentials.

“We urge people to come out from their homes to the markets/shops in a staggered manner from the early hours so as to avoid crowding at a particular place,” Mahanta said.

By and large, he said the people were complying with the COVID protocols during the curfew hours.

“However, we have observed people coming out without adhering to any physical distance or wearing of masks during the curfew relaxation hours. Such irresponsible behaviour may lead to further spread of the virus,” he said.

The DGP further informed that an amount of Rs 54,86,900 has been recovered against violations of COVID protocols by Assam Police so far.

Police authorities have also been instructed to take up the issue of maintaining COVID protocols with all stakeholders and to ensure strict implementation of the same.

“While we do not want to resort to any action during these trying times, violators of the COVID protocols will be strictly dealt with as per law,” he warned.

Four helplines are in operation as of now to cater to the police personnel and their families for providing support, help and information regarding the disease.
