Assam CM visits Kokrajhar, interacts with rescued children and intellectuals

Reiterating State Government’s commitment to eradicate human trafficking, Sarma said that the heinous crime would not be allowed to continue, asserting that efforts are on to save all such vulnerable children through strong and strategic interventions.

On the occasion of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2021, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday interacted with 40 children and 2 adults, who were rescued from human traffickers in Sikkim recently.

Reiterating State Government’s commitment to eradicate human trafficking, Sarma said that the heinous crime would not be allowed to continue, asserting that efforts are on to save all such vulnerable children through strong and strategic interventions.

Hearing about children’s harrowing experiences at the hands of the traffickers, he urged the public to join hands to erase such acts from society.

Speaking to media persons later, Sarma informed that Assam Police is searching for others trafficked children, and major breakthroughs have been achieved in tracing them.

He also said that ASHA and Anganwadi Workers would visit the villages and conduct survey of all missing children.

Sarma informed that the Social Welfare Department has been directed to take care of their education and academic activities and make all necessary provisions for them.

Later during the day, the Chief Minister also interacted with leading academicians, intellectuals, scholars and eminent citizens of BTR at the Central Institute of Technology auditorium in Kokrajhar. 

Sarma discussed holistic and sustainable growth across all socio-economic parameters, educational development roadmap for BTR in the region with the gathering.

Responding to the appeals made by the participants, the Chief Minister informed that the Udalguri campus of Bodoland University would be made functional from the next academic year and necessary faculty members would be recruited for the same. Steps would also be taken to fill up vacant posts in colleges in BTR at the earliest, he added.

It was also decided during the discussion that tie-ups between CIT Kokrajhar and IIT Guwahati would be made on various aspects. 

The Chief Minister assured that steps would be taken to cover forest villages under ICDS of the Social Welfare Department and Anganwadi Centres would also be set up. 

He urged the participating intellectuals to keep offering their valuable suggestions so that BTR’s development gets expedited. 

Besides the Cheif Minister, CEM, BTR Pramod Boro, MLA Lawrence Islary, EMs Reo Reoa Narzihary, Gautam Das, Ranendra Narzary and senior administrative and police officers were also present at the occasion.
