Assam CM presents Rs 1 crore to Lovlina; offers her DSP post in state police

The celebration that began on Thursday morning at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, Guwahati after Assam’s first-ever Olympic medal-winner, Lovlina Borgohain, set foot in the state, continued at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in the evening.

A host of politicians, sports enthusiasts, administrators, and fans thronged the auditorium of the cultural centre, Khanapara, to take part in a felicitation ceremony organised to honour the 23-year-old’s historical feat. Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on behalf of the state government, announced a slew of gifts and grants for Lovlina at the do.

“Coming from a small village in Golaghat to making the country proud at a global event such as Olympics, Lovlina’s extraordinary journey is an inspiration for millions. She says she is regretful that she couldn’t win gold at the Games, but we are not worried about that. We are feeling ecstatic that she broke the 125-year-old drought and placed Assam on the world map with a bronze,” Sarma said, addressing the crowd.

Sarma presented a cash reward of Rs 1 crore, a scholarship of Rs 1 lakh per month till the Paris Olympics 2024 for her preparations, an offer to join the Assam Police as a Deputy Superintendent of Police to the ace boxer, and announced that the government will construct a sports complex in her home constituency Sarupathar, apart from naming a prominent street in Guwahati after her.

He also expressed gratitude towards Lovlina’s parents, Tiken and Mamoni Borgohain, before announcing a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh to four of the Olympian’s coaches namely, Prasanta Das, Padum Boro, Sandhya Gurung, and Rafael Bergamasco.

“I thank my people of Assam for believing and rallying behind me throughout the Games. I believe there is a lot of sporting talent in Assam and if given the opportunity, they too will make the country proud at the international level. I urge parents to encourage their children to take sports as a career and keep believing in them,” said Lovlina.
