Assam Cabinet decides to appoint police commission for improvement of policing system

The Assam Cabinet decided to appoint a police commission to be headed by retired IAS officer Himangshu Sekhar Das, and former DGP P.V Sumant, for three months to recommend measures for improvement of the policing system, activities and deployment in the state.

The Assam Cabinet decided to appoint a police commission to be headed by retired IAS officer Himangshu Sekhar Das, and former DGP P.V Sumant, for three months to recommend measures for improvement of the policing system, activities and deployment in the state.

“Das and Sumant will be accorded the status of chief secretary,” Cabinet spokesperson and parliamentary affairs minister Pijush Hazarika said while addressing reporters after the Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.

As a part of state government’s decision to appoint one lakh youths in government jobs, the Cabinet decided to start the process to fill up 15,000 vacant posts in Assam Police. 

The process will start from September 15, 2021.

“The Cabinet has also decided to raise five new battalions of Assam Police. As many as 6270 youths will be appointed in these battalions,” the minister said

The Cabinet further decided to enhance monthly amount of sports pension from the existing Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000 and provide sports pension to the medal winners of Commonwealth and National Games. 

“Besides, it was decided that medal winners of Olympics, Commonwealth and Asian Games will get Class I government jobs, whereas medal winners of recognised world championships will get Class II government Jobs while medal winners of National Games will get Class III government jobs,” Hazarika informed.

“The Cabinet also decided to appoint Dr P.L.N. Raju who retired as the director of North East Space Application Centre recently, as the special secretary cum director of the Regional Space Application Centre,” the minister said.
