GUWAHATI:

The Assam Assembly was adjourned for 40 minutes after opposition leaders and BJP legislators got into a heated debate over the recent Assam-Mizoram border row on Wednesday.

The entire opposition - comprising of AIUDF, BPF, CPI(M), and independent MLAs - stormed to the well of the House and demanded an independent investigation either by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incident that saw the death of six Assam police personnel on July 26. Initially, Speaker Biswajit Daimary tried to pacify both sides, but when things went out of his hand, he had to adjourn the House.

The opposition parties also displayed placards that read “give protection to border residents” and alleged that the BJP government has failed to protect the residents of the Assam’s border areas.

Countering the allegations, ruling BJP legislators also rushed to the well of the House, terming the disruption in proceedings as an unruly attempt to disrupt the assembly.

Earlier, Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha had raised the issue as a point of order and had informed the House that the border row with Mizoram had begun on October 2020. “We had given a letter to the Union government informing it about the same. But even then, six Assam police personnel had to lose their lives? Whose fault was it?” asked Purkayastha.

Replying to the question, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika said that Assam and Mizoram are not two different nations, but two neighboring Indian states and the border issue has to be solved amicably.
