GUWAHATI:

The Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Monday took out a rally in protest against the construction of the 2000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP), in Gerukamukh along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.

The AJYCP members marched to the Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner’s office opposing the construction of the mega-dam, alleging that the proposed project would be a disaster for the people living in the downstream areas.

"By keeping people in the dark, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) resumed the dam construction during the lockdown period. We have been opposing its construction since the beginning as the dam is located in an earthquake-prone area," said AJYCP Dibrugarh district president, Bhaben Sonowal, while urging the government to stop the construction work.

The Centre had approved the construction of the Subansiri Lower Hydro Electric Project in 2003, and subsequently, the work started in 2005 to complete the country's largest hydropower project by 2014. However, the project came to a grinding halt in December 2011, following widespread protests by anti-dam groups. Since then, only routine maintenance works were being carried out at the site.
