DIBRUGARH:

Protesting against the alleged unethical practices of private nursing homes and diagnostic laboratories, the Dibrugarh district unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) gheraoed the Joint Directorate of Health Service office in Dibrugarh on Monday.

The AASU members took out a procession from Chowkidinghee and gheraoed the health service office for hours demanding regularization of private nursing homes and diagnostic laboratories.

"The nursing homes have been charging exorbitant rates for conducting medical tests and are taking huge amounts of money in the name of treatment," alleged AASU Dibrugarh President, Abani Kumar Gogoi.

The protesting members also alleged that most of the laboratories do not have proper documents, and the technicians working there do not possess any degree or certificate.

Terming the exorbitant fees charged by private laboratories as unethical, the student body has given the Dibrugarh Health department an ultimatum of 20 days to take necessary actions against the laboratories and has threatened to close the same if their functioning is not checked upon.
