DIBRUGARH:

At least 20 wild elephants were found dead atop Bamuni Hills in Nagaon district of Assam on Thursday.

Forest officials suspected the elephants were killed after a lightning struck them.

Sources said the elephants were struck by a lightning atop the hill on Wednesday night.

Four elephants were partially charred and three elephants were found dead lying on the foothills.

“The local villagers informed us about the death of the elephants. We rushed to the spot and found the elephants were lying on the ground. We have sent the dead elephants for post-mortem,” said a forest official.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma instructed Forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya to immediately take stock of the situation.
