GUWAHATI:

Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has quashed recent claims by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA, Aminul Islam that he had demanded Rs 10 crore from the party before the state Assembly election in March 2020.

Speaking outside Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Dibrugarh, where he appeared on Tuesday in connection with a case (No 266/19) filed against him at Chabua police station, Gogoi said, “Currently, I am the most honest person in Assam politics who is working for and with the people. Islam is a communal leader, and I don't need to reply to his claims. These claims are utterly baseless.” He also slammed the AIUDF MLA terming him to be a 'fraud and communal" leader.

Gogoi added, "AIUDF is a communal party like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). And there is no question of our party (Raijor Dal) joining the grand alliance if AIUDF is a part of it. However, negotiations can be done with Congress directly. I am confident that if we (all except AIUDF) join hands, we can stop the BJP in the by-polls."

Speaking on the case filed against him at Chabua police station, Gogoi said, “Today, I appeared before Dibrugarh CJM but I learned that no charge sheet has been filed against me. It's a conspiracy of the government to put me behind the bars once again.”

The said case against Gogoi was initially lodged in December 2019 under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, etc. Subsequently, sections 15 (1) (a)/16 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) were added to it.
