DIBRUGARH:

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on Thursday burnt an effigy of Assam forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya on NH-38 at Margherita in Tinsukia district against the rampant rise of illegal timber smuggling in the region.

The youth organisation alleged that the illegal nexus of timber smuggling is flourishing right under the nose of the Digboi DFO, TC Ranjit Ram.

Kanchan Borah, AJYCP general secretary (Tinsukia) said, “Valuable trees are chopped and taken by the timber mafia to sawmills in Arunachal Pradesh using illegal documentation. Every day, illegal timber trucks are plying along the Margherita road and the Digboi DFO is doing nothing about it.”

“Because of deforestation, the forest cover is shrinking. It is a big nexus that involves forest officials as well. We urge the Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya to take strict action against such activities and secure the forest resources of the state,” Borah said.
