DIBRUGARH:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a sit-in-demonstration at their Swahid Bedi Complex in Dibrugarh on Saturday demanding an increase in the number of college seats and appointment of college teachers.

The students’ body said that considering the unprecedented pass percentage achieved by students of High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary (HS) this year, colleges in the district won’t be able to accommodate everyone if the number of seats aren’t increased.

In the 2020-21 academic year, the pass percentages of students in the state are 93.10 per cent and 98.93 per cent in HSLC and HS examinations, respectively. Due to the COVID pandemic, the results of the students were evaluated based on their past academic records.

"We are demanding an increase in the number of college seats so that no candidates are deprived of higher education. The colleges don't have adequate seat capacity to admit all the students. Moreover, this year, very few students will go outside the state to pursue higher studies due to the COVID situation. So the pressure will be more on the state colleges,” said Abani Gogoi, president of AASU Dibrugarh district.
