GUWAHATI:

Altogether 43 inmates of the Udalguri district jail in Assam have tested positive for COVID-19.

Out of the 43 inmates, who tested COVID-19 positive, 35 are under trial prisoners, while eight are convicts.

According to sources, the COVID positive inmates have been shifted to a COVID Care Centre.

“Right to Health is a fundamental right of prisoners, which is guaranteed by Article 21 of the Constitution of India. Moreover, the Supreme Court has passed guidelines, directing the States to form high power screening committees for de-congestion of prisons,” President of Tangla Human Rights Forum, Sailen Kumar Sarma, said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier stated that the prisoners must be released on bails, while the convicts on parole until the COVID-19 situation improves.
