Tripura: Dipa Karmakar trained on equipment made out of scooter parts

 |

Dipa Karmakar scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the Olympics. This is widely known news which made not just the Northeast proud but the entire region. However what is lesser known about the young girl from Tripura is the obstacles she had to overcome to get to where she is.

Dipa unlike most Olympians who train at state of the art facilities and use the latest equipment used equipment which were made out of spare parts from a scooter. All the equipment she used were make shift and her coach Bisweshwar Nandi was always fearful while she was doing vaults but Dipa was fearless.

Dipa also faced other sorts of problems as whenever she went to a gymnastics meet where people to try to discourage her as they praised the achievements of male gymnasts. The Sports Authority of India recently spent a lot of money on making sure Dipa has the best facilities to train at but Dipa's coach laments on how the young athlete had to prove herself first before she received support.

Dipa is training very hard and is very excited about the Olympics and we are optimistic that she will do well.
