TOKYO:

In what seems to be a memorable day for India at the Tokyo Olympics after PV Sindhu clinched a bronze medal for India in Badminton, the Indian hockey team defeated the Great Britain team by 3-1 to qualify for the semifinals.

India will face 2018 World Champions Belgium in the semifinals on August 3 from where they will try to move to the finals.

The Indian team displayed some excellent show from the very beginning of the match to get past the Great Britain line of defence and do some early damage.

However, the first breakthrough came in the first quarter of the match when Dilpreet Singh scored for India and gave the lead.

India scored their second goal at the start of the second quarter, as Gurjant Singh, twisted, turned and struck it into the nets to double India's lead.

Hardik Singh produced a moment of brilliance as he scored in the final quarter to extend India's lead by 3-1 just moments before the end of the match.

For Great Britain, Sam Ward scored the only goal from a penalty corner during the third quarter of the match, giving some respite after trailing 2-0 till the end of the second quarter.

With a win against Great Britain, India will be looking forward to getting a medal and end the long wait since 1980 when India had won a gold at the Moscow Olympics.

In another quarterfinal match, Germany defeated Argentina by 3-1 to secure their berth in the semifinals. The final quarterfinals between Australia and the Netherlands saw Australia winning the match by 3-0 in penalties after having drawn 2-2.
