Sunil Chhetri overtakes Lionel Messi in active international goals; only second to Cristiano Ronaldo

NEW DELHI, January 7, 2019: Sunil Chhetri has scored his 66th goal for India during their Asian Cup game against Thailand to overtake Barcelona star Lionel Messi to become the active player with the second most international goals. His tally currently stands at 67.

The Indian forward is now only behind Portugal and Juventus ace Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 85 times for the national team.

Chhetri stood up to the occasion as he scored from the spot in the 27th minute to give India the lead against Thailand in their opener of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 at the Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The official Twitter handle of the AFC Asian Cup posted about the achievement saying, "Sunil Chhetri scores his 66th with India to overtake Lionel Messi becoming the active player with the 2nd most international goals."
