SHILLONG:

World Cup-winning Indian cricketer Syed Mujtaba Hussain Kirmani, who is in Shillong to oversee cricket opportunities in the state, has expressed his wish to associate himself with Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) and help budding cricketers from the state excel in the game.

Kirmani, who visited the MCA ground at Polo and interacted with the players on November 12, hinted at setting up a cricket academy in Meghalaya.

“If given an opportunity, it would be my pleasure to associate myself with Meghalaya Cricket. And I would like to pass on to these kids whatever experience I have,” said Kirmani.

“If there is anything I can do for cricket in Shillong or Meghalaya, it would be my utmost pleasure to invite myself, or to be invited to set up an academy in Meghalaya,” Kirmani added.

During his visit to the MCA ground, Kirmani interacted with the budding cricketers and advised them to bring in the “gentlemen” factor back in cricket and keep the country ahead in the sport.

To nurture and scout cricketing talents from this part of the country, Kirmani also stressed on starting inter-school tournaments across the Northeast on a regular basis.

“Anybody who has played international cricket has come up from the school level. His or her talent is identified at the school level itself. So it’s a good sign that the eastern sector (states) has come forward in promoting cricket,” said Kirmani.

Talking about India’s recent T20 World Cup debacle, Kirmani said, winning and losing is part and parcel of the game.

“This great game of cricket has its glorious uncertainties, which we have to accept. But we Indians are a very emotional lot. We don’t want India to lose at all; we want India to win all the time. How can we? We can’t expect Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma to score a hundred in every match. But we all cricket lovers want that, “said Kirmani.

Kirmani said, Virat Kohli stepping down as white-ball captain is good for the team.

“You cannot be a winning captain all the time; you cannot be on top all the time, and you cannot win every match. But by stepping down as a captain, he has given an opportunity to others and that is a good sign. We have got a good bench (strength) in the Indian camp, so we will go along very well,” added Kirmani.
