First Batch of Indian athletes leave for Tokyo Olympics

A total of 88 persons that included 54 athletes departed for Tokyo from New Delhi's Indira Gandi International Airport during the send-off ceremony.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and Minister of State for Sports Nisith Pramanik gave a formal send-off to the first batch of the Indian Olympic contingent for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

A total of 88 persons that included 54 athletes departed for Tokyo from New Delhi's Indira Gandi International Airport during the send-off ceremony.

Athletes and support staff in eight sports, Archery, Hockey, Badminton, Table Tennis, Swimming, Judo, Gymnastics and Weightlifting left for the biggest sporting extravaganza from New Delhi, stated the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Speaking about the Indian contingent this time, Thakur expressed confidence that the group is going to make the country proud, and aims to win as many medals as possible.

India is sending a record number of 127 athletes across 18 sporting categories this time, with prominent faces such as PV Sandhu, Mary Kom, Sania Mirza and others being high hope for India at the games.
