2018 FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA (UPDATES)

July 06, 2018:

France has advanced to the Semi-final of the Fifa World Cup 2018 after defeating Uruguay 2-0 in today quarter-final match at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

France scored its first goal through Raphael Varane's header at the 40th minute while the second goal was scored by Antoine Griezmann. The French striker fired a long shot directly at Uruguay's goal keeper, Fernando Muslera, who instead of dodging the ball away, palmed the ball straight into his net, which indeed was a shocker from the experienced goal keeper of Uruguay.

The two-time World Cup champions (1930 and 1950) failed to make an impact in this match against one-time World Cup champions (1998), creating precedence as Uruguay have never lost to France in World Cup matches.

It may be mentioned that Edinson Cavani, who scored a decisive goal for Uruguay in their previous match against Portugal was benched during the whole match following his calf injury.

France have reached the World Cup semi final for the sixth time, progressing to the finals twice (1998 and 2006).
