TOKYO (JAPAN):

Cancelling this summer’s Tokyo Olympics may be an option if the COVID-19 situation becomes too dire, Japan‘s ruling Liberal Democratic Party General-Secretary Toshihiro Nikai said on Thursday.

“If holding the Olympics is practically impossible, we will have nothing but to give up the idea,” Nikai said.

“If the Olympics were to spread infection, then what are the Olympics for?” he asked.

We may note that the Olympic Games in Tokyo, initially scheduled for 2020, were postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the country reported over 5,16,000 COVID-19 cases and 9,400 fatalities so far, with numbers trending higher in Tokyo.
