Assam: Guwahati all set to become the ‘sports capital of NE’

The Assam government announced the framing a new Sports Policy in consultation with the sports personalities of the State.

Flagging off 'Run for Sports' to observe the golden jubilee celebrations of Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah's wining Gold Medal in Bangkok Asian Games, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the State Government will launch an initiative to unearth sporting talents at the rural areas.

He said the new Sports Policy that the Government is all set to frame will be vying for promoting hidden sports talents even from the far flung areas.

Mr Sonowal further said the new policy will be framed by consulting sports personalities of the State so that the new policy can address all issues related to the sports.

He called upon the young sportspersons of the State to emulate Bhogeswar Baruah's discipline, dedication and determination to establish themselves in sports.

Outlining Government's initiatives in transforming Assam as a focal point for sports in the country, the Chief minister said the State Government has already taken a slew of measures like successfully holding South Asian Games and recently concluded Elite Men's Boxing Championship.

Moreover, in the coming year, the State has also been chosen as a venue for holding Himalayan Region Sports Festival and Under-17 FIFA World Cup.

Chief Minister Sonowal said sports has the potential of strengthening the country through developing sportsmanship spirit.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's advice to shed sweat at least four time a day, Mr Sonowal urged upon the young players to overcome idleness to climb the ladder of success.
