Assam: 1st Elite Senior Men’s Boxing Championship in Guwahati from tomorrow

Guwahati: The stage is set for the inauguration of the 1st Elite Senior Men's Boxing Championship, 2016, tomorrow at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Sarusajai sports complex in Guwahati, the main city of Assam.

Organisers of the event informed that all 37 teams are expected to reach the city by this evening, with most teams already arriving.

The championship will be a selection platform for pugilists to represent the country in international tournaments and the selection committee, lead by former Olympian and Arjuna Awardees – Gopal Dewan, Rajendra Prasad, Ali Qumar and JL Pradhan, have arrived in Guwahati.

As many as four Olympians have confirmed participation, including local lad Shiva Thapa. The others are L Devendro Singh, Manoj Kumar and Sumit Sangwan.

The championship will be inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who has been reviewing the preparations for hosting the event.
