With the Guwahati all set to be dubbed as the Sports Capital of NorthEast India. Here are five facts on Assam's first gold medallist and Arjuna Award

#1. He won the gold medal in the 800 meter race at the Asian Games in 1966.

#2. Every year on September 3, Assam celebrates Abhiruchi Sports Day in honour of his accomplishments as a coach and athlete.

#3. He was the first Assamese to ever receive the Arjuna Award.

#4. He started a sports academy which has to be shut down due to lack of funds in the 1990's. The academy was located in Sivsagar, Assam.

#5. The 76-year-old was the Chef-de-mission of the Assam Olympic Association.
