SHILLONG:

Following the announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year to strengthen the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in the borders and coastal areas, outgoing ADG of NCC North Eastern Region, Maj Gen Ananta Bhuyan, on Wednesday, said that the 6300 vacancies were allotted to the Northeast of which the maximum numbers are in Meghalaya followed by Assam and 206 educational institutions have been identified so far.

Bhuyan said that NCC gives young people exposure to develop their skill sets through various activities undertaken and would help if a person wants to pursue their career in defence.

Being the 3rd tier of defence, the NCC can be called upon for support to the armed forces and civil administration. At the educational level, NCC will no longer be an extra curriculum activity but will be an elective subject that a student can opt for in institutions.

The enrollment, however, is not up to the mark because of the covid situation but awareness is being carried out on a large scale to educate youth on the importance of NCC especially in the remote areas of the state.
