By Our Reporter, TNT News | Shillong, June 19, 2018:

Irked by the alleged adamant attitude of the Director of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), the resident doctors of the department of Cardiology of this premier institute have decided to stop carrying out routine work in the department from June 20 onwards for three days.

The decision was taken today after the residents of Cardiology department failed to get any reply from the Director, Prof. (Dr.) D. M. Thappa even after the deadline served to him expired yesterday. However, emergency services and bed side care will not be affected.

"The ongoing agitation is a mark of protest against the harassment activities by Director of the institute," a resident of the department, on condition of anonymity, said adding that they will only call off their agitation if their demands are met. They alleged the Director of harassing the MD aspirants by refusing to accept their examination fees for onward submission to the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

Earlier, the residents of the Cardiology department had shot a letter to the Director on June 14 seeking reddressal of their grievances pertaining to the conduct of examination process for DM Cardiology Course in 'morally, ethically and legally correct manner'.

"The director is using coercive methods to go ahead with his corrupt practices in the examination and luring us to appear in the examination and promising the 3rd year students that he will take care. Moreover, he does not want to discuss or to sort out other harassment activities to the students of Cardiology," alleged the residents.

According to a report which appeared in The Shillong Times, the Director of this institute, Prof. (Dr.) D. M. Thappa had clarified stating that the examination schedule is set by NEHU and the MD students have to comply with all the regulations of the University and fill up the necessary forms before getting their admit cards etc, further adding that it is the Head of Department, Cardiology who should be processing their application forms etc.

However, reacting to the statement made by Dr Thapa, the department's resident stated that it is not the job of the HOD to process the examination fees, admission forms and procedures linked with examination. "That is the duty of the administrative and Controller of Examination Cell, not the HOD of the department," added the resident.

Meanwhile, a source from the administrative office has asserted that NEIGRIHMS has taken every step to facilitate the process of conducting examinations, including DM Cardiology, for students in the most objective and transparent manner as per the rules.

Furthermore, the source said that the institute has never deprived any student of his/her right to sit for any examination nor has the institute ever refused to accept the examination fees.

Labeling the clarification statement as a 'Lie', the department's residents said "The Director has always flouted the rules laid by NEHU or the Medical Board; so to say that the examinations are conducted as per the rules is a complete distortion of the facts."

The residents of this department have threatened to further intensify their agitation if their problems are not addressed in the next three days.
