The resident doctors of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Cardiology department, Shillong have threatened to boycott routine hospital duty starting from Wednesday if the authority fails to address their grievances pertaining to the conduct of examination process for DM Cardiology Course in 'morally, ethically and legally correct manner'.

The resident doctors of this department had earlier sent a letter to the Director of the Institute on June 14 seeking addressal of the grievances and served him a deadline which ended today.

"We had earlier submitted a memorandum to the Director of NEIGRIHMS airing our grievances, in fact we have been raising this issue time and again, but they always fall on deaf ears. And interestingly, in crucial times like these, the Director is conveniently out of station," said one of the resident doctors on condition of anonymity.

The doctor said that they will wait till tomorrow for the authority concerned to response failing of which they will stop performing their regular activities.

According to the memorandum submitted to the NEIGRIHMS director on June 14, the resident doctors of the Cardiology department have expressed their simmering discontent on the matter alleging the director of carrying out harassing activities through his administrative powers.

"It is also felt that you have tried to sabotage the DM cardiology Ward and examination process for your personal reasons. This has tremendously affected our mental status which in turn has affected the academic, research and patient care. We want to acquire our highest medical degree with honesty and integrity, free from all hassle and abrasions," read the memorandum.

The resident doctors have also demanded a justified reply from the director as to "why we should stop all work in the department  of cardiology and call for help from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, government if India and other unions of the institute in order to get out humanitarian rights and dignified qualification."
