5 top health care institutions in Guwahati, Assam

June 11, 2017: Public health is one of the critical infrastructures of a region aiming to  prevent disease, prolong life and promote human health through organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, public and private, communities and individuals. The dimensions of health can encompass a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, as defined by the United Nations' World Health Organization. Public health incorporates the interdisciplinary approaches of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental health, community health, behavioral health, health economics, public policy, mental health and occupational safety and health are other important subfields.

There is a great disparity in access to health care and public health initiatives between developed nations and developing nations. In the developing world, public health infrastructures are still forming. Here we highlight some of the institutions which are committed to provide such standards of healthcare in the region :

GNRC Hospitals

GNRC (formerly known as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre), the first super specialty healthcare centre in North East India, was established in 1987 by neurologist Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah. Born into the family of a marginal farmer in Sonitpur district of Assam, Dr. Borah has scaled professional and entrepreneurial heights through the sheer dint of his intellectual capability and indomitable spirit, steadfast in his pursuit of delivering 'Health for All, Smiles for All', through his social enterprises.

In 1984 , Guwahati Neurological Research Centre, the first Neurology Clinic in North East India was set up at Maligaon, in the outskirts of Guwahati, with EEG and Lab services. Then the journey continued with many milestones including the GNRC Epilepsy Clinic, the first dedicated Epilepsy clinic of North East India which  was launched in September 10. Then again in 2007 , GNRC Swasthya Magazine was launched. On  2012 , GNRC completed 25 years of its service to the people . Then on March 21, 2012 GNRC Medireach, a social initiative of GNRC Hospitals opened for the rural people of Assam.

The hospital went on to receive the World Bank Group Awards India Development Marketplace Grant To GNRC in 2014. And as of recently, two new programmes Swasthya Yatra and North-East Association for Road Safety (NEARS) have been launched.

Narayana Superspeciality Hospital

Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Guwahati is a tertiary care hospital of the Narayana Health group in Guwahati, Assam, India. Its main medical specialities are cardiology and cardiac sciences, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics and joint replacement, and critical care facilities for adults, the elderly and children.

It was commissioned in December 2013 under a public–private partnership with the Government of Assam, and treats patients from Guwahati and other areas of North East India.

The hospital provides primary healthcare for cardiology, and provides a dialysis unit, radiology, physiotherapy, diabetology, endocrinology, internal medicine, general surgery and critical care, and operates a 20-bed oncology wing with a medical linac. It also operates a coronary artery disease care unit, intensive therapy unit, and a digital catheterisation laboratory for both, the elderly and children.
