Tokay gecko rescued in Assam

GUWAHATI | SEPT 04, 2020: 

A team from the Ronjuli Forest Range recovered a tokay gecko, a rare lizard, from the possession of a man at Kankata village in Goalpara district late Thursday evening, official sources informed here.

The accused, who has not been named, was arrested and produced before the chief judicial magistrate's court on Friday.

Under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, it is illegal to possess or trade tokay geckos, which has a habitat ranging eastwards from Nepal to New Guinea, including Northeast India and West Bengal, as well as adjoining countries like Bhutan, Bangladesh, and areas of Southeast Asia.

In 2014, tokay geckos were listed in schedule 4 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.
