“River Festival 2020” to raise awareness held in Meghalaya

The celebration of the “River Festival 2020” (Ganga Utsav) under West Khasi Hills District was held on the November 4, 2020.

The office of the Deputy Commissioner in collaboration with Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, District Water and Sanitation Mission and Basin Development Unit, West Khasi Hills District organised the program at the Conference Hall DC’s office.

Deputy Commissioner T. Lyngwa, IAS informed that the aim of the celebration is to spread awareness on the need for rejuvenation and conservation of rivers, preserving the ecology and environment by conducting various activities.

He also encouraged participants to set an example and become active agents in developing environment safety measures and to encourage people to make their nearby surrounding safe and clean.

Superintendent Engineer, PHE, Nongstoin, R. S. Nongbri stressed on the basic need of water, the effects of river pollution and the daily activities that have an impact towards the environment.

The program started with the cleaning drive of River Nonbah, followed with the Nongstoin market. A pledge taking ceremony and a song writing competition was also held.

Cash prizes and certificates were handed over by the Deputy Commissioner to the winners of the various competitions. Jiovanni Nongrum and Bankitbok Rani were declared as winners, Banshan L Mawnai and Dorina N Marak bagged the second prize, and Baibhabi N Marak was awarded the third prize in the songwriting competition.
