UGC orders Universities to obtain book on ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’

Universities have been ordered by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to obtain the book on Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) entitled as 'The Swachh Bharat Revolution'. The book essays the five-year journey of the mission comprising a collection of essays and its foreword has been composed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A letter was sent to the Vice-Chancellors of all the universities by Rajnish Jain, UGC Secretary. The letter states that the method of implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission needs to be widely shared, considering its applicability across sectors.

As instructed in the letter all the UGC regulated Higher Educational Institutions and their affiliated colleges have been requested to consider obtaining and disseminating the book on SBM and to make copies published by Harper Collins India available to students and the staff.

The book has been put together by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The essays in the book have been penned by several noted individuals from different sectors stating how these sectors contributed to the roll-out of the Mission.

Recently, the UGC also asked colleges and universities to use Khadi for ceremonial dresses meant to be worn on special occasions, including convocations. A circular highlighting the Prime Minister's message to use the raw material and emphasizing that the handloom must be revived was rolled out by the commission.

The circular also stated that Mahatma Gandhi used Khadi as a weapon during the struggle for independence and thus, the handloom is also known as Liveries of Freedom. The circular further goes on to state that the use of handlooms like 'Khadi' which is not only a comfortable piece of clothing in the hot and humid weather but will also help Indians imbibe a sense of pride about their culture and nationality.
