Nagaland: Students in the state still struggle in Maths, Science

KOHIMA, May 29, 2018: Mathematics and Science continue to be challenges for students of Nagaland state as per the recently released National Achievement Survey (NAS) for Class X.

320 schools and 9188 students from Nagaland participated in the survey, which was conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The survey assessed the achievement of students in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Modern Indian Languages (MIL) in each state and union territory of the country.

In each subject three test booklets were used to assess the learning levels in depth and IRT method was used for analysis.

The survey found that the average performance of students in Nagaland was significantly lower than the national average in Mathematics and Science. On a positive note though, the survey also found that performance was significantly higher in English and Social Science.

Meanwhile, it was observed that the average performance of students in the state from rural areas did not differ significantly than the urban areas in all four subjects except in English. When it comes to English, students from urban areas performed better that those from rural areas, according to the survey.

In terms of gender, the survey stated that the average performance of girls did not differ significantly than boys in the state in all four subjects. The performances of both boys and girls were significantly lower than their respective national averages in Mathematics and Science. It was significantly higher for boys in English and Social Science and for girls in English.

Also, it was noted that the average performance of students from different social groups (SC/ST/OBC/General) in the state did not differ significantly amongst themselves in all four subjects. Performances from different social groups in the state were significantly lower than their respective national averages for students from General group in Mathematics and Science. In the case of SC, ST and OBC students, it was significantly higher in English and Social Science.

The survey further found that the average performance of students from government schools in the state was significantly lower than students from private schools in all four subjects. Private school students also performed significantly better than their counterparts in government aided schools.

Meanwhile, the average performance of students from both government and private schools in the state was significantly lower than their respective national averages in Mathematics; and for students from Government aided schools in Hindi. It was also significantly higher in English for students from all the three types of school managements (government, private and government aided).
