Assam: Popular subject choices for honours courses vary across Guwahati colleges

GUWAHATI, June 24, 2018 (TNN): With the flow of admission process in most of the colleges in the city, there is no clear winner when it comes to the subject of choice being preferred by most students this year. College officials said aspirants of BA and BSc honours courses are choosing their subjects based on the colleges they are applying to, with the most sought after subject being different at every institute.

Lakhi Hazarika, convener of the admission committee at Handique Girls' College, said, "We have witnessed that students are choosing their subjects based on the college they are applying to. In our college, students who have done well in their board exams are opting for BA courses in psychology and English and BSc courses in zoology, chemistry and botany. But the trends are obviously not the same everywhere."

Official sources in B Borooah College – a NAAC accredited A-grade institute – said economics, education and political science are the most popular choices for BA aspirants while chemistry is the most preferred choice at the BSc level.
Though the admissions at the undergraduate level are yet to take place in Cotton University this year, officials believe that, like every year, English, political science, physics and chemistry will remain the preferred choices. "This has remained the unchanging trend for years now, even before the merger of Cotton College with Cotton University," said a member of the admission committee in Cotton University, adding that physics and chemistry has been the preferred choice for BSc aspirants because they offer better job prospects.
For BA aspirants, English has always remained the most popular choice at Cotton University while there is a huge demand for political science among students who would like to seat for competitive exams later, the member added.
