Assam defers matriculation, HS exams to May 2021

The High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary (HS) examinations in Assam will be held in May, ending speculations over the conduct of the exams amid uncertainty because of the pandemic situation.

State education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the HSLC (matriculation) examinations would commence on May 11 while HS examinations will start from May 12, 2021.

The HSLC and HS exams in the state are generally between February and March but postponed this year keeping in mind the situation.

The announcement comes after the Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had, on Thursday, stated that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class X and XII board exams would be held in May-June this year.

Sarma also informed that the results of the HSLC and HS examinations would be declared within July 7 and July 30, 2021, respectively.

It may be mentioned that the 2021 Assembly elections in the state are scheduled to be held in April-May this year even as the dates have not been announced. In all probability, the poll process would be completed before the matriculation and HS exams in the state.

Apart from Assam, a few other states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and West Bengal have deferred their board exams this year in the wake of the pandemic situation.
