ULFA leader Anup Chetia appears in CBI court in Guwahati, CBI seeks remand of eight days
GUWAHATI: ULFA General Secretary Anup Chetia who was in transit remand of the CBI has been brought to Guwahati on Wednesday by a special aircraft of the Border Security Force(BSF) from New Delhi.
The 48 year old ULFA leader stepped in Assam after seventeen long years. He was taken to the Special Court of CBI straightaway from the LGBI airport in Guwahati and then taken to the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.
Chetia was detained in Bangladesh in 1997. He was handed over to the Indian government on Nov 11 and after that he was arrested by the CBI .
Along with Anup Chetia two more ULFA leader, Lakhiprasad Goswami and Babul Goswami who were in jail were also brought to Guwahati amidst heavy security.
Many former colleagues of Anup Chetia, who are now part of the peace talks with the Indian government including Foreign Secretary of ULFA Sasha Choudhury, Raju Boruah, Pradeep Gogoi were seen in the court premises though they were not allowed to meet Anup Chetia.
Anup Chetia's wife Manika Boruah Chetia and son Sagar Boruah also were seen in the court.
"I am happy to see him after so long. Law will take its course so I can't comment on anything now. But yes, I and my son are more than happy to see him today."
Sources say Chetia is most likely to be handed over to CBI again for eight more days. Both Assam police and CBI have appealed to the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Sangeeta Haloi, seeking custody of the leader and to interrogate with the leader who along with many other cases, is also accused of murdering Congress leader Debojit Dhar Choudhury in Golaghat on 29th August, 1986.
Pradeep Gogoi, former ULFA leader while talking to newsmen said, "We are happy to see him after such a long period. We need Anup Chetia to be a part of the ongoing peace process of peace talk of ULFA with the Indian Government. We would request the State government as well as the Centre to allow him to join the peace process for an effective solution. Government has a major role to play here for peace.
Anup Chetia, whose real name is Golap Boruah was the founding member of ULFA. Chetia's lawyer Bijon Mahajan has said that, he would apply for bail for his client, though sources say chances of getting bail is almost nil.
