What is Mental Health, and why is it important?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and can contribute to his or her community.

Why is it important? Because there is no health without mental health.

The world observes October 10 as World Mental Health Day, and it is important to note that the topic should be discussed freely and openly without the fear of being stigmatised.

That, at least, is the aim but sadly, with the attitude society has towards mental illness, it will take some time to achieve this goal.

As Dr. Jasmine Lyngdoh, a psychologist from Shillong, rightly pointed out, the right way to deal with mental illness begins at home.

She also stressed on the need to understand the gravity of the situation before it becomes worse.

Care not what the society might say or think if you come out. Care more about your health.

Depression and anxiety are some common emotions one experience at least once in their life, irrespective of age.

Talk about it. Do not suffer alone. There is no shame in seeking help from a friend or a professional.

Never give up!
