APSC scam ripples on Meghalaya, 5 year ban on backdoor applicants

 |

Assam Public Service Commission(APSC) has been on the spotlight clearing the next wave of leadership but will the bandwagon continue on the elimination of bad apples who have tarnished the reputation.

Like nine pins the top rung from Rakesh Paul to Basanta Doley they fell bring down the image of 'steel frame' of the state and the country as well.

Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) has always brought the best minds of country to implement and put policy and decision making issues on the drawing board and it would not be justified to shoot the administration for not bring out the best, Armstrong Pame career civil servant from Manipur passion and dedication towards making the lives of people better when he took the initiative of building a 100 km long road in a remote hill of Manipur!

Brig (retd) Ranjit Borthakur 61, was made an APSC member in 2013 and his appointment as the chairman of the Constitutional body was cleared by the Sarbananda Sonowal government which is following orders from the Union government at the moment is bending rules such as the latest demonetization exercise. While speaking to a reputed newspaper the ex military officer said that,"The image of the APSC suffered "very badly" in the past one month after three members including Chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul were arrested in quick succession since November 4. The other two arrested members are Samedur Rahman and Basanta Kumar Doley, both former college professors. My immediate tasks include rebuilding the image and regain the faith of the people," It would be interesting to see the fate of the APSC which is handed over to a retired military officer who would use his expertise to win the hearts and minds of the people.

Come the Meghalaya Public Service Commission(MPSC) it has always drawn criticism from sections of society on its functioning. Max Lyngdoh(name changed) a student has said "that unless the skeleton of the Commission is broken down and repaired using the bottom up approach, it will remain a sick joke for applicants applying using the correct means but on a later stage will learn that he/she has been 'rejected for the fact that he could not grease the palm of a top rung official or does not have the right contacts to put through."

The latest issue the Commission has been in a tug of war is the probe of one of the job aspirants, Millon Ch Momin who filed a writ petition questioning the legality of the result of interviews conducted by MPSC between December 15 and 17, 2014, for the post of junior MPS officers in the Home (Police) department.

The Meghalaya Public Service Commission issued a notification recently that it would debar any candidate for a period of five years from appearing examinations or personal interview if they would canvass directly or indirectly to any member or staff of the commission. Why this call came late? Many who have warmed their seats are about to retire with superannuation for their lifetime till death.

It was a wake up call for the Meghalaya Public Service Commission(MPSC) before many heads are going to roll.
