GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has expressed hope that ULFA General Secretary Anup Chetia, handed over by Bangladesh to India, would play an important role in the peace process and said the militant leader should be handed over to the state government.

"We believe that he will paly an important role in the talks process. We have been demanding for extradition of Anup Chetia from Bangladesh for fruitful discussion between the government and pro-talk ULFA. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should not take credit for ULFA leader Anup Chetia's deportation from Bangladesh.

He said that it was he who continuously demanded the rebel leader's extradition to help ongoing ULFA peace talks with the central and state governments.

Chief Minister Gogoi said he would write to the central government with a request to hand over the ULFA leader to Assam.

Anup Chetia  (real name Golap Baruah is also known as Sunil Baruah, Bhaijan or Ahmed is the General Secretary of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom in Assam. He is also one of the founder leaders of the group.Incidentally he was arrested in 1991 but released on bail ,he then crossed over to Bangladesh. His current status and influence in ULFA has now been seen as minimal .

Paresh Barua ,the one time friend of Anup Chetia remains the most elusive members of the ULFA and it is suggested by many that Chetia has little or no influence Paresh Barua to come to the negotiating table.
