REPORTING FROM INDIA'S NORTH-EAST IN THE DIGITAL AGE: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

MONDAY 16 and TUESDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2015

As mainstream Indian media channels increasingly cut back on regional bureaux in North-East India there is a danger of an already under-represented region losing visibility on the national and global stage. Yet the region need not remain invisible in an age where big media organizations offer digital platforms for regional stories. Journalists in the region are entrenched in local networks and could provide invaluable reportage but need to equip themselves with the latest skills in digital broadcast journalism and the use of social media for reporting.

The 'Reporting from India's North-East in the Digital Age' training programme hopes to make a serious investment in high quality Indian journalism that aspires to world class standards. The workshop will:

  • Map regional and national news agendas and channels of communication
  • Forge productive links between local and national media professionals and organizations
  • Identify and address gaps in the training of media professionals from the region
  • Identify future strategies and digital technologies for reporting from the region

Confirmed speakers include  Professor Rosie Thomas, Co-director Chevening South Asia Journalism Programme, University of Westminster; Professor K.C. Baral, Director, EFLU, Shillong; Kishalay Bhattacharjee, Award winning journalist and Director, Reachout Foundation; Shubhranshu Choudhury, Award winning journalist and founder of CGNet Swara; Linda Chhakchhuak Co-Founder of Grassroots Options; independent journalist and anthropologist.
