Manipuri film actor Chinglen Thiyam passes away

Famous Manipuri feature film actor Chinglen Thiyam, popularly known as Commando Chinglen, passed away at 70 on Thursday at RIMS Imphal.

According to media reports, he was suffering from a stroke and had been undergoing treatment at RIMS.

Initially, he was treated at Little Clinic Imphal and later shifted at RIMS where he breathed his last.

Chinglen Thiyam was a resident of Nambol Khabi, Bishnupur district. He was a versatile actor who had won many awards and accolades as an actor, lyricist and director.

Chinglen Thiyam has not only contributed to digital films but also acted in many Manipuri celluloid films.

Chinglen Thiyam, who had acted in over 100 plays and directed around 20 plays, was a senior artist and Director of the group, Iramdam Manipur Artistes Association.

In his career as an artist, he has been awarded four times as supporting actor. He also won senior fellowship 2015 in Shumang Leela conferred by Manipur State Kala Akademi; best lyricist award 2015 in the Manipur State Shumang Leela Festival organised by Manipur State Kala Akademi.

Recently, he was honoured with the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Award, 2020 for his timeless contribution towards Manipuri Shumang Leela.

Keishamthong Thoibi, Thawaina Punsigidamakta, Etinphamda Sambal, Khomlang Laman, Hingbagi Mamal and Wari Loidri are some of the plays that saw the actor at his best and won hearts of the Manipuri audience.
