Meghalaya: Stage set for election to lone RS seat on March 26

SHILLONG | March 22:

The stage is all the set for the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Meghalaya which is slated to be held on March 26.

The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat will witness a straight contest between NPP state president and MDA consensus candidate, Dr WR Kharlukhi and Congress nominee and former MLA, Kennedy Khyriem.

Informing that Rajya Sabha election is an open ballot voting, Chief Electoral Officer, FR Kharkongor said the method of conducting the elections of Rajya Sabha is  very different than the usual Lok Sabha or the general elections.

He said that the sixty MLAs will have to mark their preferences on the ballot paper indicating their preferences in terms of number I or 2 and after voting they will have to show it to the authorized agents of their respective political parties.

"The voters can use only violet pen while indicating their preferences," he added.

Talking about preparedness, Kharkongor said that all preparations are in place.

It may be mentioned the term of the present MP Rajya Sabha, Wansuk Syiem will end on April 12.
