Residents of Dadenggre Civil Sub Division held a meeting on Saturday in the village of Shyamnagar in Phulbari in West Garo Hills to press for the demand for a separate district.

The meeting, which was the first general meeting on the demand was led by its chairman, Rupa M Marak and was chaired by Francewell Marak, the president of GSU Phulbari unit.

Speaking during the event, Rupa stated that other than Dadenggre, the other two civil sub divisions – Ampati and Resubelpara (created in 1982 in Garo Hills) have already been made into districts and they have been pushing for the upgrade to a district since 1999 without success.

"This is the first general meeting on the demand for a separate district and we will hold many more such meetings to gather support for the demand. This is genuine demand and we will continue to press for the creation of a separate district for Dadenggre," said Rupa.

The chairman added that the demand was genuine and was the right of all. "It's a government by the people, for the people and of the people and our demand as people is a new district. We are hopeful that the government will listen to us," he added while adding that they were ready to agitate if required on the matter.

The meeting saw the presence of many NGO leaders, senior citizens and concerned residents who unanimously resolved to continue the fight for a new district.

"We are all for the creation of a separate district and will continue to demand the same until it is met," said Ranuel Sangma, FKJGP Phulbair president.

Others who spoke on the occasion included Johnkeat Sangma (FAF president), Ahsraff Hoque (president ACHDO) Lolith Rabha (president Rabha Students Union), prominent resident, Uttam Das among others.
