SHILLONG, Aug 26, 2017: Continuing the trend of hurling petrol bombs at public and private properties, unknown miscreants has yet again resorted to this kind of violence by targeting people's houses at Upper Mawprem in Shillong during the wee hours of Saturday.

According to the East Khasi Hills district police chief Davis NR Marak, unknown miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a house belonging to one Joydeep Paul located at Upper Mawprem at around 2.30 am on Saturday. Only minor damages were reported as the fire was doused at the nick of time.

Sources informed that Joydeep Paul is the general secretary of the UDP youth wing in Mawprem.

Marak further informed that police are investigating into the matter to find out whether this incident is just some random case or is it connected to the earlier arson cases in the capital city.

It may be mentioned that the state witnessed a spate of arson cases across Ri Bhoi district and some parts of Shillong following the decision of the government to give a green signal to the railway project in the state. Government properties and offices were burned down, tea estate went up in flame, vehicles torched in several places in Ri Bhoi district and Shillong, though no causalities have been reported in these cases so far.

Itmay be reminded that so far, the police had arrested several members of the Khasi Students' Union (KSU), a pressure group which is spearheading the protest against railways sans ILP. The Eight KSU members were released on bail just recently after remaining in jail for more than two months.

Interestingly, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Friday had commented that whenever the railway issue is being brought up in the state, it becomes an 'allergy'.
